Historic Designation
DescriptionThe Village of Germantown has prioritized protecting, enhancing, and maintaining sites of special character or special historical interest. Designation of a property can be initiated by the property owner, or by the Historic Preservation Commission with approval from the property owner. 

Initiation: Applicants may submit an application to the Historic Preservation Commission to initiate the review process. 

Decision-maker(s): The Historic Preservation Commission makes a recommendation to the Plan Commission. The Plan Commission makes a recommendation to the Village Board. The Village Board makes the final decision


Review process:
 
  1. Submittal of application materials. The applicant submits an application and other required materials to the Historic Preservation Commission.
  2. Determination of completeness. The Historic Preservation Commission reviews the submitted materials to determine if the application is complete. If the application is not complete, the applicant will be notified of the incomplete or missing requirements.
  3. Review: The Historic Preservation Commission notifies the Department of Public Works, the Park and Recreation Department, the Fire and Police Departments, Building Inspection, and the Planning Department of the property under consideration for designation and requests comments. The Historic Preservation Commission reviews the comments and makes a recommendation to the Village Plan Commission. 
  4. Property owner notice. The Zoning Administrator sends a notice to the owners or occupants of the properties lying within the Village of Germantown and 1,000 feet outward from the exterior boundary of the area proposed under consideration for designation. 
  5. Staff report. The Zoning Administrator prepares a staff report and provides a copy to each member of the Plan Commission and Village Board, the applicant, and posts a copy on the Village website.
  6. Plan Commission recommendation. The Plan Commission makes a recommendation on the appliation to the Village Board.
  7. Public notice. The Village Clerk  publishes a public notice in the local newspaper; two times in different weeks.
  8. Preparation of draft ordinance. The Zoning Administrator prepares a draft ordinance if the Plan Commission supports the designation.
  9. Village Board decision. The Village Board makes a decision based on the decision criteria to approve or deny the designation.
